چکیده

This article describes a first version of a system for translating speech into Spanish Sign Language. The system proposed is made up of 4 modules: speech recognizer, semantic analysis, gesture sequence generation and gesture playing. For the speech recognizer and the semantic analysis, we use modules developed by IBM and the University of Colorado respectively. The gesture sequence generation uses the semantic concepts (obtained in the semantic analysis) associating them to several Spanish Sign Language gestures. This association is carried out based on a number of generating rules. For gesture animation, we have developed an animated character and a strategy for reducing the effort in gesture generation. This strategy consists of making the system generate automatically all agent positions necessary for the gesture animation. In this process, the system uses a few main agent positions (2-3 per second) and some interpolation strategies, both issues previously generated by the service developer.

Mental Timeline in Persian Speakers’ Co-speech Gestures based on Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory

One of the introduced conceptual metaphors is the metaphor of "time as space". Time as an abstract concept is conceptualized by a concrete concept like space. This conceptualization of time is also reflected in co-speech gestures. In this research, we try to find out what dimension and direction the mental timeline has in co-speech gestures and under the influence of which one of the metaphoric...

Generating Culture-Specific Gestures for Virtual Agent Dialogs

Integrating culture into the behavioral model of virtual agents has come into focus lately. When investigating verbal aspects of behavior, nonverbal behaviors are desirably added automatically, driven by the speech-act. In this paper, we present a corpus driven approach of generating gestures in a culture-specific way that accompany agent dialogs. The frequency of gestures and gesture-types, th...

Automated Gesturing for Embodied Animated Agent: Speech-driven and Text-driven Approaches

We present two methods for automatic facial gesturing of graphically embodied animated agents. In one case, conversational agent is driven by speech in automatic Lip Sync process. By analyzing speech input, lip movements are determined from the speech signal. Another method provides virtual speaker capable of reading plain English text and rendering it in a form of speech accompanied by the app...

Generating Co-speech Gestures for the Humanoid Robot NAO through BML

We develop an expressive gesture model based on GRETA platform to generate gestures accompanying speech for different embodiments. This paper presents our ongoing work on an implementation of this model on the humanoid robot NAO. From a specification of multimodal behaviors encoded with the behavior markup language, BML, the system synchronizes and realizes the verbal and nonverbal behaviors on...

Joint interpretation of input speech and pen gestures for multimodal human-computer interaction

This paper describes out initial work in semantic interpretation of multimodal user input that consist of speech and pen gestures. We have designed and collected a multimodal corpus of over a thousand navigational inquiries around the Beijing area. We devised a processing sequence for extracting spoken references from the speech input (perfect transcripts) and interpreting each reference by gen...

Sequencing and Optimization Within an Embodied Task Dynamic Model

A model of gestural sequencing in speech is proposed that aspires to producing biologically plausible fluent and efficient movement in generating an utterance. We have previously proposed a modification of the well-known task dynamic implementation of articulatory phonology such that any given articulatory movement can be associated with a quantification of effort (Simko and Cummins, 2010). To ...
